Marion H. Beckett’s portrait of Theresa Helburn reflects the poised confidence of a woman who reshaped American theater. Helburn, co-founder of the Theatre Guild of New York, played a pivotal role in bringing landmark productions like Porgy and Bess, Oklahoma!, and The Iceman Cometh to the stage.

The portrait’s swirling red background contrasts with Helburn’s cool, blue-gray figure, evoking her calm composure amidst a career filled with bold, innovative choices. Helburn’s passion for French theater and modern art shines through Beckett’s portrayal, making this work as vibrant and layered as the legacy it represents.
