Henri Matisse - The Codomas, 1946 (From Jazz) Print
Add a touch of artistic brilliance to your space with The Codomas, a vibrant and dynamic print from Henri Matisse’s groundbreaking Jazz series. Created in 1946, this work captures the energy and excitement of the circus, a recurring theme in Matisse’s later years. The two bold yellow figures, representing a famous trapeze act, leap across a vivid green background, while the striking black and yellow grid symbolizes the safety net beneath them. With its bold colors and abstract shapes, The Codomas reflects Matisse’s innovative cut-out technique, which redefined modern art.
About the Artist:
Henri Matisse (1869–1954) was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, known for his revolutionary use of color and form. Initially associated with the Fauvist movement, Matisse evolved his style over the decades, exploring flattened compositions, decorative patterns, and expressive line work. In his later years, when ill health prevented him from painting, he pioneered a new technique—cut paper collages—using hand-cut shapes from sheets of gouache-painted paper to create lively, fluid compositions. His Jazz series, from which The Codomas originates, represents the pinnacle of this method, combining visual storytelling with poetic reflections.
