Capture the serenity and artistry of traditional Japanese woodblock printing with this beautiful reproduction of Kanaya #25 by the legendary artist Katsushika Hokusai. This piece is part of his lesser-known series "Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido," showcasing scenes from the historic route connecting Edo (present-day Tokyo) and Kyoto.
A Glimpse into Old Japan
"Kanaya," also known as "Sekiya no sato" (The Village of Sekiya), transports you to a tranquil riverside village. Unlike Hokusai's iconic Mount Fuji series, this work focuses on the peaceful beauty of the countryside, with lush hills rising in the background. Notice how Hokusai uses the scene to give a sense of journey and tranquility.
About the Artist:
Katsushika Hokusai (1760 – 1849), known mononymously as Hokusai, was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist of the Edo period, active as a painter and printmaker. His woodblock print series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji includes the iconic print The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Hokusai was instrumental in developing ukiyo-e from a style of portraiture largely focused on courtesans and actors into a much broader style of art that focused on landscapes, plants, and animals.
